Abstract:

First World War illustrated broadsides (posters, chiefly text) from 1918, promoting killing of California ground squirrels (including California governor William Stephens' proclamation of Squirrel Week, and commentary by U.S. Food Administration chief Herbert Hoover and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture D.F. Houston) in order to prevent the loss of food crops considered vital to the U.S. war effort. Squirrels are depicted as enemy combatants, wearing helmets, iron crosses and other attire of the German military.
